From Odate,  Aikata

Mage Wappa is the traditional craftwork that has been made for about four hundred years in Odate city (Akita prefecture).
It is famous for the highest quality of cedar wood in Japan.
The cold winters in this area are the secret of the strength and beauty of the cedar wood. The shavings are placed into boiling water, carefully bent when wet and tied up with bark from cherry blossoms.
